City of Gardens


Community Garden
7/3/09 - The B&BCAG garden committee and the City of West Sacramento Parks and Recreation department staff have identified a 1/2 acre of land [with water] at Bryte Park to be used as a pilot project for a community garden. . See the Bryte Park Garden page for updates and photos.

2/28/09 - We have met with the youth coalition at Riverbank School on Friday. Suggested planting in ideas and solutions for beautification areas. Where B&BCAG will be mostly involved is providing compost and seeds for students to plant sunflower seed in ½ pint milk cartons and then we will grow the sunflowers to plant ready size and give them back to the participation students and West Sacramento Youth Coalition Staff will oversee the planting and care of the sunflower garden at Riverbank School. The garden should be in full bloom by May!

7/16/09 -We have scheduled two meetings. One is on Thursday, July 23, 2009 at 7pm. The second meeting is on Thursday, August 6, 2009 at 7pm. Both are being held at the WSPD Community Room at 550 Jefferson Blvd.
5/16/09 - We had a productive meeting on May 7, 2009. We picked our dates of October 17, 2009 and the alternate date in case in rains is October 24, 2009. We are waiting for the dates to be approved by Andre Pichly. Then we can fill out our permit and move forward as planned with implementing our strategy.
5/13/08 - Rivers Homeowners Association is informed of the project and supports it.
5/7/09 - Date tentatively set for October. Cleanup area will be from I Street Bridge to Harbor Blvd.
4/28/09 - We have scheduled a meeting to fill out our permit, decide on a date for our project; strategize on the specifics of what we need to do to make this a success.
4/1/09 - Productive discussions with the City have resulted in a plan to work with the City to support and enhance current riverbank cleanup projects. Project dates will be announced.

Assist Seniors with Yards
2/26/09 - We still have more information to gather for this project. We will need to have a system in place to locate the seniors that need/want this service.

Welcome Signs
5/13/09 - Interest and excitement is growing rapidly for our community entry "Welcome to Bryte" and "Welcome to Broderick" signs. We have a need from the community for volunteers to help design these signs. Lets not miss this chance to keep the excitement growing. Sign up now!

Bryte Post Office
5/18/09 - Save the Bryte Post Office campaign launched. See more info..
5/10/09 - Our Bryte Post Office may be considered for closure. We are calling for a letter-writing campaign, including letters to the Post Master General of the United States Postal Service, to keep the Bryte Post Office open. Contact us if you would like to support this campaign. We can supply envelopes and stamps.

West Sacramento Senior Services
7/2/09 The City of West Sac has agreed to support and collaborate on aSenior Transportation Summit to be held in fall 2009.
4/29/09 - B&BCAG committees met with City to gather information about currently available senior transportation. Senior transportation planning meeting will be scheduled in early June
2/26/09 - B&BCAG volunteers developed a comprehensive list of senior services in West Sacramento. See the list on our website.

Seniors Reading to Kids program
5/26/09 - B&BCAG will collaborate with the Turner Library in recruiting senior volunteers for the ELF program. Program will begin approximately July 1.
5/18/09 - Meeting to be scheduled within a few days to discuss the program.
4/10/09 - Library is very interested in collaborating. They also have a satellite homework center which would benefit from senior participation.
2/22/09 - Turner Library in West Sacramento looks forward to a collaboration, pending approval of their Board. This program may fill a gap resulting from reduced funding in some areas. The program, if approved, may be implemented following the opening of the new Library scheduled to be finished at the end of 2009

Weekly Rec Center day for seniors - with shuttle service
7/1/09 - Water Aerobics classes at Rec Center and shuttle service 2 days a week implemented.
4/5/09 - Senior shuttle to Rec Center is on the table for discussion and is supported by City staff. Outcome depends on funding.
2/24/09 - We have had discussion with the City staff who are open to considering "senior mornings" at the Rec Center. City staff and B&BCAG are researching transportation options.

Deadbolt locks on doors of senior center apartments
2/19/09 - After conferring with Yolo County Housing Authority and West Sacramento Senior Center staff, it was determined that all of the senior apartments were equipped with deadbolts. To address the problem raised, a senior resident working with B&BCAG agreed to informally scan the apartment doors to see if there were missing or broken deadbolts. If that appeared to be an issue, the resident will advise the apartment dweller to bring it to the attention of the manager.
