COME JOIN US FOR A CUP OF COFFEE THIS SATURDAY MORNING May 16!

It's a MEET-UP
On Saturday, May 16 from 8am to 9am, some of our B&BCAG members will meet for coffee at La Bou on Jefferson and Merkley in West Sacramento for our 4th Meet-Up. You are invited to drop in, ask questions about B&BCAG, volunteer, or just join the conversation and coffee. Tell your friends! See the website for more information and check back for the date and location of our next Meet-up.

Would you like to suggest a Meet-Up in your neighborhood? Let us know. Our Meet-ups have been attended by members of West Sacramento City government as well as many of your neighbors. La Bou has been generous in providing space for our first four Meet-ups.

Questions and Answers from the May 2nd Meet-Up
Community members asked questions and Council Member Mark Johannessen, who attended the Meet-up, has provided the answers below.

    1. Regarding the youth pass for the Rec Center: It will be $49 for the summer. There are currently no plans to subsidize this for folks who cannot afford the fee, but I am still working on this issue.

    2. The cost to repair the Riverbank pool is high (over $250,000 estimated). It's in need of fencing, pool resurfacing and more work. This will not be repaired for this summer due to the cost. The city will be looking at how to handle the crowd using the new Rec Center pools, and they feel that they have many options available to assure those who want to use the facility this summer, can use it.

    3. Regarding the use of radar guns by private citizens, per the Chief: The City of Sacramento does not issue citations in these situations, and it is purely a deterrent measure. The problem is that in many jurisdictions where it has occurred, it has set up conflicts between neighbors over being video taped and concerns of vigilantism. The most effective thing people can do is to call in their observations on the traffic tip line (617-4645) providing dates, times and locations so the PD can then respond with enforcement at the most beneficial time to maximize the return on the resources expended.

    4. The only "inventory" of youth activities in West Sac is that which is contained in the new Recreation Center Playbook. It seems the B&BCAG can create a committee to develop their own inventory in B&B and provide benefit to the community.
(Contact B&BCAG if you want to be on a committee to gather information about youth resources.)

Community Gardens
A B&BCAG Vegetable Gardening Class at Bryte Park last Saturday informed new and experienced gardeners alike on "Planting a garden from seeds and transplants". There will be a class in August on "Planting a successful Winter Garden". If you would like to attend and receive information about our "City of Gardens" meeting please sign up!

A group has been formed to facilitate successful Community Gardens in West Sacramento. Representatives from the City of West Sacramento, Washington Unified School District, the West Sacramento Health Collaborative, Bryte & Broderick Community Action Group, West Sacramento Youth Resource Coalition and others will meet to list constraints to be solved, benefits to the community and issues with existing community gardens, and to explore a potential site for a new community garden. Please participate! Send an e-mail to B&BCAG and you will be notified of our first meeting.

Historic Bryte Post Office
Our Bryte Post Office is once again threatened with closure. We are calling for a letter-writing campaign, including letters to the Post Master General of the United States Postal Service, to keep the Bryte Post Office open - as was promised by the USPS Western Regional Office many years ago. Contact us if you would like to support this campaign.
