Bryte and Broderick Community Action Group

Make a Difference - Participate in Your Community

Welcome to another Bryte & Broderick Community Action Group (B&BCAG) update.

We encourage you to attend the West Sacramento City Council meeting on March 11 at 7 pm at City Hall. The Council will discuss and make a decision about the mitigation funds which are coming from the Developers as compensation for loss of the golf course, formerly located at the property now known as The Rivers. The Developers agreed to pay the City 3 million dollars. The Council has agreed that the money would be used for improvements and/or amenities in the Bryte/Broderick area. The Bryte and Broderick Strategy has been identified as a top priority on the City's 2008-2023 Strategic Plan Policy Agenda

Project updates - proposed at 1/31/09 Community Forum

Community Gardens

Riverbank School Beautification
2/28/09 - We have met with the youth coalition at Riverbank School on Friday. Suggested planting in ideas and solutions for beautification areas. Where B&BCAG will be mostly involved is providing compost and seeds for students to plant sunflower seed in ½ pint milk cartons and then we will grow the sunflowers to plant-ready size and give them back to the participating students. West Sacramento Youth Coalition Staff will oversee the planting and care of the sunflower garden at Riverbank School. The garden should be in full bloom by May!

"Grow Your Own Food Garden" classes
3/9/09 - The Bryte &Broderick Community Action Group's City of Gardens committee plan to offer Bryte and Broderick residents "Grow Your Own Food Garden" classes. The goal is to get neighbors together to help each other establish food production in their backyards. We will come to your backyard and offer classes so, "You too can grow a successful 2009 Victory Garden". Watch our website calendar for meeting dates and times.

Immediate Issues- Quick Fixes

Riverbank Cleanup
2/26/09 - Our project is still in the research phase. There are various government agencies and private organizations to notify in order to get our project accomplished. These meetings are still going on. Then we need donations. After finding out more details, we will proceed with asking for donations and select some dates for the activity.

Assist Seniors with Yards
2/26/09 - We still have more information to gather for this project. We will need to have a system in place to locate the seniors that need/want this service.

Senior Issues

Deadbolt locks on doors of senior center apartments
2/19/09 - After conferring with Yolo County Housing Authority and West Sacramento Senior Center staff, it was determined that all of the senior apartments were equipped with deadbolts. To address the problem raised, a senior resident working with B&BCAG agreed to informally scan the apartment doors to see if there were missing or broken deadbolts. If that appeared to be an issue, the resident will advise the apartment dweller to bring it to the attention of the manager.

Weekly Rec Center day for seniors - with shuttle service
2/24/09 - We have had discussion with the City staff who are open to considering "senior mornings" at the Rec Center. City staff and B&BCAG are researching transportation options.

"Seniors Reading to Kids" program
2/22/09 - Turner Library in West Sacramento looks forward to a collaboration, pending approval of their Board. This program may fill a gap resulting from reduced funding in some areas. The program, if approved, may be implemented following the opening of the new Library scheduled to be finished at the end of 2009
