2010 vision: Transformation through Education

BBCAN MeetUp
Saturday, January 23 from 9am to 10am at LaBou. Join us for coffee, meet the Board and Committee Chairs, hear about our plans for 2010, and share your ideas for BBCAN projects and events.

Bryte and Broderick Community Institute (BBCI)
The 3rd installment of the Bryte and Broderick Community Institute (BBCI 3) will be on February 6 from 9:00am to noon at The Rivers Clubhouse (see a map). BBCI 3 will focus on practical ways to plan, run and follow up on meetings that lead to action. If you have ever conducted a meeting, think you will lead a meeting or want to help someone who leads meetings do it better, this workshop is for you. We encourage you to bring colleagues from your neighborhood and any other group you work with that uses meetings to get things done. more info...

Bryte Park Master Planning
The Bryte Park visioning design workshop will be held from 10:00am to 3:00pm on February 27 at City Hall. Lunch will be provided free of charge. We are hoping to have a large turnout from the neighborhood. This is an opportunity to participate in hands-on planning for the development of a park in your neighborhood for your families. Spread the word and bring a neighbor.

Rose Pruning Class
On January 23 from 9am to 11am, Yolo County Master Gardener Diane Rake will teach rose pruning at Bryte Park. Diane will be assisted by Master Gardeners Henry Garcia-Alvarez and Don Rake. Bring your pruners and loppers and learn first-hand the proper techniques for pruning roses. We will meet by the picnic area on the west side of the park. If it rains on the 23rd, the class will be held on January 30th, same time and place.
BBCAN City of Gardens Committee also has a nutrition class scheduled for March 13 from 12noon to 1:30pm. Bring your own bag-lunch and we will assess the nutritional values of the food in the lunch.

More from our Network...

Become a Vita Volunteer
Volunteer to help working families receive all of their eligible tax credits from the State and Federal governments. Every tax season, many families do not claim their federal earned income tax credit (EITC) because they can not afford to pay a tax preparer. The IRS Volunteers in Tax Assistance (VITA) program depends upon community support to be able to offer free tax preparation services to families earning less than $52,000 a year. Assemblymember Mariko Yamada will host a Super Saturday VITA Workshop. Training begins February 6. See more info and registration

Sactown Heroes Digital Storytelling
The Sactown Heroes are currently working on a digital storytelling project. The purpose of this video is to document change in attitudes and behavior in youth and adults as a result of their involvement with the West Sacramento Youth Resource Coalition. We hope this project will begin to educate others about the importance of Youth Development within our community.

Support our Local Library
There is room for interested teens on the West Sacramento's Arthur F. Turner Community Library Teen Advisory Council. For adults, the Toy Library offers a volunteering opportunity that is fun, particularly as a child's face lights up when borrowing a new toy.

The ABC's of Business
The first in a series of Business Resource Seminars. Presented by the City of West Sac and the West Sac Chamber of Commerce on Jan 28. ADA Compliance, Bidding on Public Projects, California Labor Law Updates. more info
